SUMMARY:Reggae Fest Kangaroo Valley
DESCRIPTION:While the echoes of cancellations are ringing in the ears of music lovers across the country\, the inaugural Kangaroo Valley Reggae Festival is announcing that not only is the festival going ahead as scheduled in May\, but it will also be the most wallet-friendly festival this year. To counter the recent cancellation disappointments for festival lovers\, The Friendly Inn\, Kangaroo Valley is throwing its hat into the original live music ring with a one-stage festival\, headlined by Sydney reggae and roots royalty\, The Strides. \nAmid a string of festival cancellations and hiatus announcements from regional events like Splendour in the Grass\, Falls Festival\, and Groovin’ the Moo\, music fans have voiced their disappointment over sky-high ticket prices and the lack of big-name headliners on festival lineups. The Australian music scene is under stress\, with the touring and festival landscape dominated by larger corporate companies like Live Nation\, impacting a festival’s ability to operate independently and maintain unique cultural offerings. Adding to your local festival promoter’s woes is the surging cost of living and the impact of climate change\, with the hectic weather events that come along with it. The viability of regional events being able to keep up with operational costs and surging logistical expenses puts regional touring on the back burner for most promoters. \nThe Friendly Inn\,  who has successfully hosted the Kangaroo Valley Craft Beer & BBQ Festival for the past nine years\, is now investing in an original live music event. Matching humble venue beginnings like Splendour in the Grass\, which launched their festival in 2001 at the Belongil Fields Caravan Park\, and Bluesfest\, which called the Red Devil Football Park home for over ten years\, the Kangaroo Valley Reggae Festival is starting out in much the same way\, in the fields of a back paddock in a stunning regional location. \n“It’s been a rough season for musicians\, with many anticipated events getting axed due to ballooning costs. We are lucky here in Kangaroo Valley at The Friendly Inn\, being the promoter and venue owner\, we are in the fortunate position to be able to invest in the local live music scene\,” said Caroline Lentai of The Friendly Inn. “This year\, we’re focusing on what’s most important—bringing people together to enjoy great music at a great price. We’ve been looking to launch the Kangaroo Valley Reggae Festival for a while and now seems like the perfect time to bring on some good vibes.” \nThe Strides will headline the day with their combination of high-energy dancehall reggae and their own original flavour. “We give our all and put on a big party\,” said drummer Carlos Adura\, who also plays with the likes of Tim Finn and Skunkhour. Joining them will be MC Iha Jah and DJ Prento. The local line-up includes Benji & the Saltwater Sound System\, Casuarina Light Phenomenon and JJ Spence Band both featuring Kangaroo Valley’s very own school teacher Mr Gorman and local producer from The Patchy Growers Luca. The festival will also be the welcome back performance for Ren & the Rudeboys who look a two year hiatus from the live scene. There will be hands-on drumming workshops and performances from Damion Stirling of Beatmeisters\, so be sure to pack the bongos. Helping transport you to the beaches of the Caribbean will be local pitmaster King’s Porker\, serving up Jamaican street food with pulled pork and special sauces. As always\, The Friendly Inn will have entertainment for the kids for this all-ages event\, with kids under 12 having free entry. \nTickets are on sale now at www.kvreggaefest.com. Kangaroo Valley is nestled between the South Coast and the Southern Highlands\, situated just 2 hours south of Sydney and 2 hours north of Canberra\, with great accommodation options available from visitkangaroovalley.com.au \nAbout Kangaroo Valley Reggae Festival: \nTickets at www.kvreggaefest.com \nAdult $55\, Junior aged 13-17yrs $35\, Family Pass 2 Adults + 2 Juniors $150 \nGates open at 11.00 am – Festival ends at 9.30 pm \nAll ages event\, Kids 12 and under are free \n159 Moss Vale Road\, Kangaroo Valley \n—\nTickets www.kvreggaefest.com \nAdult $55 Junior aged 13-17yrs $35\, Family Pass 2 Adults + 2 Juniors $150\nGates open at 11.00am – Festival ends 9.30pm\nAll ages event\, Kids 12 and under are free \n159 Moss Vale Road Kangaroo Valley \n

SUMMARY:DEEP ECOLOGY with John Seed and friends At Winderong Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Rainforest Information Centre presents DEEP ECOLOGY with John Seed and friends \nAt Winderong Farm\, \nBring your own tent or campervan or air b&b or you can stay in your own home if you live nearby. \nTickets are sliding scale from $150-$600  ($150 for students or unemployed\, $600 if you’ve got a great job or wealthy\, or something in between) \n25% of the proceeds will be donated to the Rainforest Information Centre. \nVegetarian lunches and dinners will be provided\, gluten-free and vegan options by request after booking. Please bring your own mess kit and breakfast foods. Tea and coffee will be provided. \nFROM JOHN SEED: \nI have worked for worldwide rainforests since 1979. Although many of our efforts succeeded\, for every forest saved 100 have disappeared. Clearly\, you can’t save the planet one forest at a time. It’s one green Earth or a bowl of dust. Without a profound change of consciousness\, we can kiss the forests goodbye\, the ones we’ve “saved” alongside the rest. \nDeep ecology is key to the change we need. To deep ecology\, underlying all the symptoms of the environmental crisis lies a psychological or spiritual root – the illusion of separation from the rest of the natural world which stems from anthropocentrism or human-centeredness. \nConditioned since the Old Testament to “subdue and dominate” nature\, the modern psyche is radically alienated from the air\, water and soil which underpin life and this is reflected in the rapid shredding of all-natural systems in the name of economic development. Deep ecology reminds us that the world is not a pyramid with humans on top\, but a web. We\, humans\, are but one strand in that web and as we destroy this web\, we destroy the foundations for all complex life including our own. \nWhile we maintain a self-image created in the matrix of anthropocentric culture\, a shrunken and illusory sense of self that doesn’t include the air and water and soil\, we will experience nature as “outside” our self and fail to recognise that nature “out there” and nature “in here” are one and the same. \nMany people INTELLECTUALLY realise that we are inseparable from Nature and that the sense of separation that we feel is socially conditioned and illusory. \nBut as the late Arne Naess\, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Oslo University\, the man who coined the term “Deep Ecology” wrote: “it is not enough to have ecological ideas\, we have to have an ecological identity\, ecological self“. \nBut how can we nourish our ecological identity? In answer to such questions\,  Joanna Macy and I developed a series of experiential deep ecology rituals called the “Council of All Beings” and in 1986\, with Arne Naess and Pat Flemming\,  wrote a  book called Thinking Like A Mountain – Towards a Council of All Beings (which has been translated into 12 languages). Along with others\, we have been facilitating these workshops around the world since then. \nIn this workshop we remember our rootedness in nature\, recapitulate our evolutionary journey and experience the fact that every cell in our body is descended in an unbroken chain 4 billion years old\, through fish that learned to walk the land\, reptiles whose scales turned to fur and became mammals\, evolving through to the present. \nWe further extend our sense of identity in the Council of All Beings itself where we find an ally in the natural world\, make a mask to represent that ally\, and allow the animals and plants and landscapes to speak through us. We are shocked at the very different view of the world that emerges from their dialogue. Creative suggestions for human actions emerge and we invoke the powers and knowledge of these other life-forms to empower us in our lives. \nOne of the rituals we will share is honouring our pain for the world: we grieve for all that is being torn from our world\, the species lost\, the landscapes destroyed. Only if we can allow ourselves to feel the pain of the Earth\, can we be effective in Her healing. This is why the Vietnamese Buddhist monk\, Thich Nhat Hanh\, has said that in order to heal the Earth\,  “the most important thing that we can do is to hear\, inside ourselves\,  the sounds of the Earth crying”. \nThis workshop enables us to find an end to the illusion of separation and experience our rootedness in the living Earth.\n \n  \nInga Mueller‘s love for nature was born from her early childhood experiences of connecting with trees through her forest kindergarten education in her hometown in Freiburg\, Germany. Inga formally engaged with Deep Ecology during her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at the Australian National University\, where she was supporting research projects on natural resource management in the agricultural context and on leaf litter decomposition rates in Australian temperate rainforest ecosystems. \nInga also holds experience in aged care both in Sydney and in Canberra. Through her current work as a permaculture gardener and bushland regenerator at Winderong Farm she aims to aims to embody the values that align environmental care with community care. \nBy building on her ability to facilitate permaculture practice and environmental connections\, Inga hopes to bring Deep Ecology to a broader audience and facilitate sustained nature connections. \n  \n  \nSally Novak is an educator\, activist and Kundalini yoga teacher with a deep connection to and passion for protecting Mother Earth. She has always been fascinated by the thinking of First Nations people\, and aligns with their sustainable practices and ways of connecting to Country. \n  \nAs a school teacher\, Sally has always designed lessons to cultivate children’s awareness of the environment and how their interaction with it impacts it. She currently teaches mindfulness in schools and has written a program called Sunshine Toolbox to assist children to transmute anxiety\, regulate emotions\, develop empathy and connection\, so that they can feel confident to engage more deeply with the world around them. \nSally is also a core member of Rising Tide\, a climate defence activist group\, through which she first became aware of the work of John Seed and Deep Ecology. After experiencing Deep Ecology firsthand\, Sally is inspired to further develop her facilitation skills and continue sharing this important work to strengthen\, grow and support the activist community. \nFor more information\, johnseed1@ozemail.com.au

SUMMARY:Women of Song
DESCRIPTION:Presented in association with Musica Viva Australia Women of Song is an authentic show of conversations and songs\, articulating First Nations cultural practice in the here and now\, live on stage.  \nWomen of Song is an innovative new show\, developed by the acclaimed Jessie Lloyd (of Mission Songs Project) including themes of intergenerational practices\, singing on and from country\, commitment to community\, and preserving knowledge in song. It’s an intimate celebration of the ‘here and now’ of Indigenous culture\, a rare mix of spontaneous conversation and songs\, exploring the modern-day practice and living heart of the ‘world’s oldest living culture’.  \nThe audience listens in as three First Nations singers have a conversation. Someone’s story may remind someone else of a song\, or a favourite popular song might start a discussion among them all. Each conversation and each performance will be unique\, as the women explore live on stage how their songs preserve the social\, cultural\, or environmental shifts of a community\, and deepen connections to country\, genealogy\, and custom.
