KVCCB - Moss Vale Road Cambewarra - "No news" news - Kangaroo Valley

The text discusses the efforts of the NSW government to repair Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain. The repairs were delayed due to challenging geotechnical conditions, but 16 out of 24 landslip sites have been repaired and the remaining 5 are undergoing project development activities. The work is expected to be completed by mid-December 2024. The government is making efforts to minimize traffic disruptions and updates can be found on their website. The author, Al Lockyer, expresses appreciation for the government’s response but notes that the website has not been consistently updated.

KVCCB – Moss Vale Road Cambewarra – “No news” news

Hi KV Community,

Here is something that I just had to share with you all…

In mid-Sep, I contacted Gareth Ward to enlist his help on getting an update on when the repairs to Moss Vale Road Cambewarra would be completed. The next day, he passed on my request to the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads. Nearly two months later, the Minister replied and Gareth has kindly passed this on.

Below is what the State Government thinks is an answer as to when the repairs at Cambewarra will be completed…

Thank you for your correspondence on behalf of Mr Allan Lockyer about the repair works on Moss Vale Road. I apologise for the delay in responding.

I appreciate the reasons that prompted Mr Lockyer to write and acknowledge his concerns about ongoing maintenance of Moss Vale Road. Following receipt of Mr Lockyer’s correspondence, I sought advice from Transport for NSW.

As Mr Lockyer is aware, Transport for NSW is working to repair damage on Moss Vale Road following the record-breaking rainfall in 2022 and make the road more resilient to future natural disaster events.

Transport for NSW identified a total of 24 landslip sites on Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain. Of these, 16 sites are repaired and three sites have repairs underway which
are scheduled for completion by mid-December 2024 to allow for the removal of the single lane closure over Cambewarra Mountain. The remaining five sites are undergoing project development activities including design development, environmental assessment and contract preparation for procurement of specialist geotechnical contractors in 2025.

I am advised challenging geotechnical conditions have caused delays in drilling and grouting the slope stabilising soil nails. These have required changes in work methods which has slowed progress. In order to maintain the pace of work, Transport for NSW increased the available work hours each night by reducing the number of traffic access times. Traffic access is now provided at 8pm, 10pm, 12am and 4am.

Transport for NSW is also carrying out landslip repairs on Moss Vale Road at Barrengarry Mountain. This work began in late August 2024 and is expected to be complete in November 2024, weather permitting. Current traffic impacts include a single lane closure and reduced speed limit of 40km/h. The community is advised to allow an additional five minutes travel time.

Mr Lockyer may be assured that Transport for NSW makes every effort to minimise the impact of repairs on traffic flow and uses traffic control to provide ongoing access through work areas, although at a limited capacity. Traffic management is a critical part of road repair work as it ensures the safety of workers and motorists.

Transport for NSW will continue to limit any disruptions as much as possible and will update the community as work progresses. Further details of Moss Vale Road repair work can be found at https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/current-projects/moss-vale- road-repair-work. The community can also subscribe to receive email updates by visiting this webpage.

Thank you for taking the time to write. I genuinely appreciate the effort Mr Lockyer has made to raise this matter with the NSW Government.

I guess it’s kind of an answer…if they hit the deadlines. The website the Minister mentions was updated in August and then October. ☺

Regards,
