KVCCB – New repair work method on Cambewarra Mountain

Hi KV Community,

Well, we finally have an update from Transport for NSW on the repairs to Moss Vale Road Cambewarra and Barrengarry.

It appears the revised opening times do not commence until 13 October (but who knows – the VMS and Live Traffic NSW app still imply they are in place now).

New repair work method on Cambewarra Mountain

October 2024

Crews working at three landslip sites on Cambewarra Mountain are changing work methods to overcome difficulties they have experienced with drilling work for the repairs.

The work crews have encountered more difficult ground conditions than expected with fractured rock and loose soil found in larger areas of the landslips.

This has caused a high proportion of the holes being drilled to collapse.

Crews have adopted a new drilling method that ensures the holes do not collapse, which involves inserting a steel casing while drilling the holes.

While this method is necessary, it is a much slower and more time-consuming approach.

The crews are expecting to experience the same issue when they start drilling the horizontal drains that will help direct the flow of water from the slope during heavy rainfall. Larger machinery may be needed for this work.

Changes to traffic access times

Transport for NSW has reluctantly taken the decision to reduce the number of traffic access times to provide more much-needed time for drilling operations.

For each five-minute access time, the large machinery used for drilling must stop work and be moved off the road to allow vehicles through then moved back into place to start work again – an operation that can take up to 30 minutes.

From Sunday 13 October, the traffic access times will be:

8pm, 10pm, 12am and 4am

Progress on Barrengarry Mountain

Work is almost complete at the landslip site on the top hairpin bend at Barrengarry Mountain.

The crews will soon finish applying the spray concrete then work will begin to install new kerb.

Work at this site is expected to be completed by Monday 14 October.

Crews will then move to the next repair site located about 150 metres below the Barrengarry Eastbound Rest Area.

Repairs were started in September to repair landslip sites at the top hairpin bend on Barrengarry Mountain.
