Upper Kangaroo River Road

    Get close up and personal with a natural rural river, it’s vegetation and wildlife. Osborne Park to Upper Kangaroo River Hall return. Allow two hours to a half-day for this bike ride.

    This ride or drive is about experiencing the Valley floor with its lush green pastures and visiting the Upper Kangaroo River at several points along the way. It is also a great way to appreciate the beautiful scenery of forested escarpments that enclose the Valley. This route starts at the Kangaroo Valley Hall in Osborne Park and crosses historic Hampden Bridge before turning into Upper Kangaroo River Road. From here the road follows the river and there are several spots to take a break and get close to the river. This is a great way to see a natural rural river and it’s vegetation and wildlife. The turnaround point is at the historic Upper River Hall and suspension footbridge.

    Warning: Do not attempt to cross any creeks or rivers after heavy rain. Crossing creeks in flood can be life threatening. There is a cycle path from the start at Osborne Park to Upper Kangaroo River Road. The rest of the route is on a sealed side road. This road can be narrow and windy in sections and has some local and tourist traffic. This ride is good for any time of the year. If riding in summer you can cool off at the shady river spots. As you are passing through farmland you may experience flies in the warmer months. Please keep to formed roads and tracks and do not venture onto private land. The bridges are access to private land. Please respect the privacy of residents and don’t go beyond the river crossings. Mobile phone reception varies from good to ‘no service’ on this route.

    HOW TO GET THERE
    This circuit starts at the Kangaroo Valley Hall, Osborne Park, 300m east of the post office, where you can leave your car if you are riding. Here there are toilets, a swimming pool, a playground and the beginning of the Historic Walk. Turn right, onto the cycle path, as you exit the park to start the ride.

    TAKE WITH YOU
    Water, (reusable water bottles and drinking water available in the village), sun protection, insect repellent and snacks. Warm and wet weather gear should be included in your pack as weather can change very suddenly. Take swimmers and a towel if you wish to swim at the river.

    Cabbage Gum, Rough-barked Apple, River Peppermint, River Oak, Sydney Blue Gum/Bangalay hybrid, Thin-leaved Stringybark, and Water Gum.

    FAUNA
    Brush-tail and Ring-tail Possums, Grey Kangaroos, Platypus, Swamp Wallabies, Wombats. Birds include: Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike, Brown Thornbill, Crested Pigeon, Crimson Rosella, Channel Billed Cuckoo, Corella, Dollar Bird, Dusky Woodswallow, Eastern Rosella, Eastern Spinebill, Eastern Whip Bird, Eastern Yellow Robin, Fan Tailed Cuckoo, Galah, Grey Butcher Bird, Grey Shrike Thrush, Golden Whistler, Gang Gang, Grey Fantail, Koel, King Parrot, Kookaburra, Lewin’s Honey Eater, Little Wattlebird, Magpie-lark, Magpie, Nankeen Kestrel, Noisy Friar Bird, Pied Currawong, Raven, Red Browed Fire Tail Finch, Red Wattle Bird, Satin Bower Bird, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Sacred King Fisher, Superb Blue Wren, White Faced Heron, White Browed Scrub Wren, Welcome Swallow, Willie Wagtail, Yellow Faced Honey Eater, Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo.
